It’s Memorial Day Weekend, a great three-day holiday for many of us who live free today thanks to the many men and women who died preserving our liberty and the millions more who have served this country.

Christopher Montera was doing just that a few months ago when he came as close as anyone can to giving his life for his country. But he survived a near fatal blast in Afghanistan, and today Army Sgt. First Class Montera is still healing in Brooke Army Medical Facility in San Antonio from severe wounds he had from the mortar blast. His family hopes to return him to San Diego, where he will continue his healing and therapy at Balboa Hospital.

The family of Army Sgt. First Class Christopher Montera, who was critically wounded in Afghanistan last month and now is recovering at Brooke Army Medical Facility in San Antonio, Texas, has established a bank account for those wishing to support San Diego Sportfishing’s own wounded warrior.

Christopher Montera, who grew up working and fishing on sport boats in Point Loma, faces a long recovery, and his family plans to spend as much time at his side as possible. That will require them to eventually have to pay for flights and other expenses. Christopher Montera faces his own expenses, too, once he recovers from surgeries and treatments and is released from care. Those wishing to contribute are asked to do so through the Christopher Montera Support Fund, Wells Fargo Bank, Account Number: 2606136782.

Montera, 32, was on his first tour of Afghanistan last month after three tours in Iraq when he was critically injured. He was securing the perimeter with another soldier, SPC Jordan Gerald Houghton when “an 82M mortar ignited a 400-pound section of C4,” his mother said. Houghton was injured, but he was able to pull Montera to safety and saved his life, April Montera said.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Christopher Montera was attending San Diego State, but like a lot of Americans, he felt outrage when terrorists attacked U.S. soil in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

Like a lot of young Americans, Montera decided to do something about it.

“We watched it all unfold on TV that morning together,” his mother, April Montera, said. “Next thing I know, he’s telling me he is joining the military. I said, ‘No,’ of course. No mother wants her son to join the military. But he went and joined the Army.”

Sgt. First Class Montera, 32, was on his first tour of Afghanistan after three tours in Iraq last Thursday when he was critically injured. He was securing the perimeter with another soldier, SPC Gerald Houghton when “an 82M mortar ignited a 400-pound section of C4,” his mother said. Houghton was injured, but he was able to pull Montera to safety and saved his life, April Montera said.
